About Us

Welcome to American Guides.org, the most comprehensive online guide to local American heritage. Our site is designed to be used by everyone from students, teachers, and history buffs, to domestic & international tourists. Through this web site and our other programs, we encourage local heritage education, preservation, and investment. Feel free to wander the thousands of pages on our site, and rediscover America!

We are publishing, both online and in print, the historic American Guide Series - over 50 books, and 35,000 pages of fascinating local history & heritage guides, compiled by the Federal Writers' Project in the late 1930's. The new print version will be designed as a coordinated set, with a common format and original text, but a new selection of clear, well-annotated historic photos.

Meanwhile, we are developing a new geration of American Guides, with a volume for each county in America (that's over 3,000). In the spirit of the Federal Writers' Project, each of these volumes will be sponsored by a local institution, and compiled and written by local experts. If you, your county, historical society, or other institution wish to author/sponsor one of the New American Guides, please contact us.

See our Updates page for latest additions; we already have 5,000 pages from the famous American Guide Series, and a growing collection of historic photos & text from Colorado.
