What's in it for me?
Knowledge & communication are powerful tools. With your help, this Project can become a major force for positive change in America, by creating many opportunities for collaboration, cooperation, community-building, learning, and more. By describing what we value in our communities, we begin to share our values, and value what we share.
For any individual, the Project may be your "heritage wikipedia"; a community advertisement; a local tour guide; nationwide historical society; genealogy reference; research source; link to other heritage web sites; environmental guide; fundraising partner; advertising channel; community-building program; PR opportunity; or just a focus for one's hobby. We welcome your ideas, and your innovations. Here's just a few of the groups who can take advantage of our programs & resources.
Tourists: Heritage tourists are known as the fastest growing tourism segment - these folks stay longer and spend more in the local area. We offer a single heritage knowledge portal, where you can easily find and print out what you want to know about any place in the county, with easy links to local historic and environmental attractions - in just a click of your mouse, you can also reach our sponsors. You will appreciate our reliable information and deep background on the places you visit, and you may well enjoy participating in the Project when at home or away. Our nationwide presence in schools and other programs helps expand this market and service it more effectively.
Students: You do most of your research online, but it's hard to tell what resources (such as wikipedia or commercial sites) are unreliable. AmericanGuides.org offers edited content, hard to find details, plus links to reliable sources of information, without "dumbing-down" the material. If you participate, you can be an author, researcher, or create related YouTubes, Podcasts, photography, and more.
Teachers: Lesson plans, source materials, references. Make the American Guides, and creating portions of the County Guides, part of your curriculum.
Historical Societies: You can help us build your County Guide with materials you already own. In many ways, the Project is a national version of your local Society. If you don't have a web site, we serve as a stand-in. If you have one, our Guide is a supplement; we're THE obvious first place to look for information on you and your area. If you are our County Partner, you can sell Sponsorships on our County Guide. If not, you can purchase one and the user can print your information or link to you directly. Need to motivate kids & others to help you out? Use us to help attract their attention. Need to save a heritage site - put it on the County's endangered section for all the world to see!
Tourism Associations/Chambers: A single place to find out all about every community in America. It's a no-brainer, you should be a Sponsor or Partner, and encourage everyone you meet to actively participate.
Neighborhoods: Help us get your sites & stories into the County Guide. Save what is left.
Ethnic Groups: Help us get your sites & stories into the County Guide. Don't let us forget your contributions.
Historic/Environmental Preservation Groups: Our volunteers, and yours, can research endangered sites, and publicize them here, through our local site listings. Many sites too small for major campaigns can be recognized here. We can also help reach students, teachers and tourists, and you can help us explain the value of the "sites" we see.
Local/National Business: Sponsor us & be visible to ANYONE interested in visiting your area. Be known as a supporter of our community & national values. Help get people buying American and locally. We plan a sponsor section which will highlight American-made products, too.
Libraries: Partner with us, provide the NHDB as a resource for your patrons, create other programs around the Project and communities across America..
Photographers: Give us links to your photos, or sell photography through our store.
Local Arts Groups: Give us your story, links, or sell local arts & crafts through our store.
Authors: Write a section, or we link to you, Sponsor us, or perhaps edit others work.
Film/Audio Producers: Get loads of ideas & background from our materials. Work with us to create works about local communities and people.
Entertainers:Ours is the natural place to promote your heritage-themed bands, such as country, folk, blues, etc., as well as environmental/historic songs, and activist messages. Do it with a Sponsorship, or work with us on a fund raising concert. We are open to creative ideas.
Thank you for your kind support!
